[About]
Harm van den Berg (b. Amsterdam, 1970) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Amsterdam. Through drawing and sound, he explores self-organization, the spontaneous emergence of complex patterns and behaviors within natural systems, questioning how form comes into being.
In his studio, Van den Berg recreates these processes across different media. In detailed pencil drawings, countless repeated elements generate unexpected forms. In multichannel sound installations, emergent patterns become audible as they shift and evolve through space.
Through these materials and methods, Van den Berg reveals the subtle dynamics underlying natural systems, making visible and tangible the forces and structures that shape our environment. His work invites viewers to experience the fragile and often invisible processes that quietly govern the world around us.
Van den Berg has exhibited and performed at institutions including Goethe-Institut Amsterdam, Kunsthal KAdE, Museum Belvédère, Kunstvereniging Diepenheim, Stroom Den Haag, NIMk, W139, De Voorkamer (Lier, BE), Galerija Klovićevi dvori (Zagreb, HR), Zoo Galerie (Nantes, FR), Museum De Paviljoens (Almere), and the AC Institute (New York City).
He has received grants from the Mondriaan Fund and the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts in support of his artistic research and practice. His work is held in several collections in the Netherlands.
